WE are living in the most horrific times...Everything is backwards, but Mamdani's win in NYC has put a huge smile on many faces. We, as progressives of all races, ages, and sexualities are committed to challenging the allegations that he will impose Sharia law on the Boroughs and turn the City into a socialist republic [if only!] It's wild...all of it. Abrazos, amigo...
Hey ejb—the Mamdani primary victory is pretty exciting. I don’t know if you saw last week’s Poet in Mexico, where I linked to an article in the Forward by Jay Michaelson? I thought it was terrific. Abrazo compañera.
Hi Deborah—it’s a good question. Lots of folks have anger problems. They may not be alcoholics though. Anger is hard on the alcoholic in that it’s a great cause of resentments which can lead the alcoholic who is not in treatment to drink (it can lead the alcoholic in treatment to want to drink as well, and that’s one of the reasons anger is often addressed in various treatment programs).
The dry drunk has a double problem when it comes to anger issues. One is that because the alcoholic is not in treatment they may not be addressing them at all. The second is that in not addressing the disease, the anger issues are exacerbated.
Dry drunks often are receiving treatment for other things. Anger may be one of them. The dry drunk may be seeing a psychiatrist, for example. But unless the alcoholism is being addressed along with the anger issues, the anger issues aren’t likely to be resolved because the alcoholic isn’t addressing the larger disease.
Thanks, Mark, for your insights and the analysis of the Trump fiasco, especially the comparison with our Mexican president. I enjoyed the Springsteen video as well, but noted that he omitted the Guthrie line about the No Trespassing signs impeding his freedom to walk across "this land" of his. Hope you will consider me as a fellow poet in Mexico since I have been writing from here since 1990 and poetry is my first and final love. Here is my homepage. www.drmichaelhogan.com
Michael—thank you for this—I’ve wondered why Bruce didn’t include the no trespassing verse—Pete Seeger said it was his favorite of all of them. I didn’t know of your poetry! Of course, your historical nonfiction, yes. Looking forward to reading it. Poets in Mexico united.
Thanks. Yes, fairly widely published, New Letters, Paris Review, APR, Colardo Review etc.. Two Pushcart Prizes, and an NEA Creative Writing Fellowship. History is my second love.
Studied with Shelton and Stafford. Hosted Seamas Heaney and Joseph Brodsky at U of AZ.

Thank you, Mark. Can one tell the difference between a "dry drunk" and someone who could not, or hasn't, dealt with the causes of their anger?

I hope that makes sense.
Very much so, thank you!

Michael—looking forward to the day we actually meet!
Thank you my brother.
You were my first email read this morning.
God in is infinite wisdom steered me to it.
It reminded me to stay true to my sober path.
You are amazing
